Words. Stories. Images.

Where do these all meet? That question fascinates me as a writer and artist — how can I combine the visual and the narrative elements to make something greater than the sum of the parts?

Sometimes this results in BOOKS, such as Edible, a book that I filled with illustrations of over 70 plants! Other times it leads to professional articles with accompanying photographs or essays in illustrated graphic/comic form. And sometimes, I just draw my funny little story-filled primitive drawings for the joy of it.

Thematically, I focus on areas of my own experience: farming, parenting, homeschooling, building community, eating and living seasonally, exploring nature, paying attention.

I am pretty in love with plants. I read a LOT. I walk one mile every morning and would walk many, many more miles everyday if there weren’t so many other good things to do.

Before starting our Oregon farm Oakhill Organics with my husband Casey Kulla in 2006, I earned an MA in creative nonfiction writing and a BA in English and photography (with many art and design classes thrown in!).
